The Heartland

Three herdwicks dot the rising to
       The skyline
Alone, yet hefted in companionship
Trusting in the rock, the bracken
And the harshness of
       Crag and scree.
High wheeling carrion crows caw the valley
Searching for death’s meal-
       Nature reliant-
And below, ribbon glistening torrents
Sing the song of the valley
Breathless in humility
Persistent in the art of incessant
       Sculpt: form and reform.

The eye breathes the scene
Holds the essence in the heart
And enkindles a deeper spirit
Only the wanderer can know.
