A Second Chance

Yesterday I was given the news I am clear of cancer.

The morning sun gives
The window world its
Artists’ look – a hint of sepia
Washed with ruddy hope and
The grass is heavy with
Dew droplets which water the
Future with the nutrients
Of a smile that refuses to die.
Below, the blackbird, bold and shrill,
Sings to his garden
From the gate-arch while
The sparrows and bluetits
Bicker for their place
On the feeder and chorus
Their youth-
Their zest for life.
To the left yesterday’s clouds hang
On the western horizon:
A trace of threat, just as
A reminder and
Cars humming into
The distance whisper, ‘Hurry!
There are places to go, things to do.’

But the air I breathe
Feels deep with its freshness,
New with its promise and
Behind me, sleeping Margaret
Breathes the thank God
Of exhaustion
And the deep sleep of relief.

Another living, another day
Begins with a smile
That refuses to dim.
